John J. Flynn embodies dedication, expertise, and a strong commitment to justice in his role as the 41st District Attorney of Erie County, New York. Born and raised in Western New York, Flynn’s passion for the law was evident from an early age. After graduating from East Aurora High School, he pursued his higher education at Bowling Green State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
A Journey of Service and Excellence
Following his undergraduate studies, Flynn’s sense of duty led him to the United States Navy. He attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and upon graduation, he proudly became an Ensign. Furthering his education, Flynn attended Navy Supply Corps School, where he honed his business acumen. He then served as the Assistant Supply Officer on the USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7) in San Diego, California, where he courageously deployed overseas to the Western Pacific during the Gulf War.
Combining Legal Expertise with Military Service
After completing his naval commitment, Flynn returned to Western New York to pursue a legal education at the University at Buffalo School of Law. Even during this time, his dedication to duty remained unwavering as he continued to serve in the Naval Reserves. Following his graduation in 1995, Flynn resumed active duty as a Navy attorney at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. There, he served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, contributing his legal expertise to the military. He subsequently spent two years as the Officer-in-Charge of the Office of Legal Counsel at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. During his honorable service, Flynn earned numerous accolades, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals.
An Accomplished Legal Career
In 2001, Flynn decided to focus on his legal career and returned to Western New York. He joined the esteemed Erie County District Attorney’s Office, where, as an Assistant District Attorney, he quickly rose to prominence within the office’s Homicide Bureau. However, his passion for justice extended beyond the courtroom, as he also worked as a lecturer at SUNY Buffalo State from 2009 to 2016, imparting his wisdom in a Moot Court class.
A Leader in Public Service
Never one to shy away from public service, Flynn embarked on a political journey in 2003. He won a seat on the Town of Tonawanda Town Board, and three years later, he was appointed as Town Justice. In 2008, his expertise led to his appointment as an acting Buffalo City Court Judge. In 2010, Flynn was appointed as the Town Attorney in Tonawanda. His dedication to public trust was recognized in 2016 when he was elected as the Erie County District Attorney.
A Trailblazing Leader
Taking office on January 1, 2017, Flynn began implementing his vision for a fair and just legal system. His efforts were rewarded as he won re-election in 2020, securing a second term as the District Attorney. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, Flynn was appointed as the President of the District Attorneys Association of New York (DAASNY) in June 2023. This prestigious role allows him to further promote communication, cooperation, and training among district attorneys, thereby improving the legal system throughout the state.
A Leading Voice in the Legal Community
Flynn’s influence extends beyond New York’s borders. He currently serves as the Chair of the Board of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA), a position he attained after being unanimously elected by the organization’s members. As an advocate for justice, Flynn demonstrates his unwavering commitment to improving the legal landscape.
A Life Committed to Family
While Flynn’s dedication to his work is undeniable, he also cherishes his family life. He resides in the Town of Tonawanda with his wife, Debra, and their five children.
